Physical Therapy at St. Luke’s offers speech and communication based therapies that can help treat a wide variety of conditions. Our team of speech-language pathologists and audiologists are experienced in improving communication for patients of all ages. We also have several specially trained LSVT BIG and LOUD clinicians.

Speech Therapy
Speech-language pathologists (SLP) diagnose and treat communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults. The difficulties that one experiences may be a result of neurological disorders, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, physical problems, voice pathology, hearing impairments, and emotional disorders.

Common Conditions Treated Include
  • Inability to produce sounds/lack clarity
  • Rhythm and fluency difficulties
  • Voice disorders
  • Difficulty producing or understanding language
  • Modifying an accent
  • Feeding and/or swallowing difficulty
  • Cognitive-linguistic disorders
Treatment for Head and Neck Cancer
Head and neck cancer and its treatment frequently cause changes in both speech and swallowing, which can ultimately affect one's quality of life and ability to function in society. Speech-language pathologists play an important role in the management of patients with head and neck cancer who experience these difficulties.

SLP evaluation may address:
  • Dysphagia (swallowing)
  • Dysarthria (slurred speech)
  • Vocal quality concerns
SLP therapy may include:
  • Education on vocal hygiene
  • Use of Visi-Pitch equipment for voice
  • Breathing exercises
  • Oral motor exercises
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation for swallowing (i.e. Vital Stim, if warranted)
  • Recommendations of the safest, least restrictive food/liquid consistencies
  • Safe swallow techniques
Speech-language pathologists also have a direct role in the delivery and management of services with Laryngectomy patients (pre and post-surgery). We can provide education on equipment needed post-surgery as well as assist with choosing best communication option.
