Speech-language pathologists (SLP) diagnose and treat communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults. The difficulties that one experiences may be a result of neurological disorders, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, physical problems, voice pathology, hearing impairments, and emotional disorders.
Common Conditions Treated Include
Treatment for Head and Neck Cancer
- Inability to produce sounds/lack clarity
- Rhythm and fluency difficulties
- Voice disorders
- Difficulty producing or understanding language
- Modifying an accent
- Feeding and/or swallowing difficulty
- Cognitive-linguistic disorders
Head and neck cancer and its treatment frequently cause changes in both speech
, which can ultimately affect one's quality of life and ability to function in society. Speech-language pathologists play an important role in the management of patients with head and neck cancer who experience these difficulties.
SLP evaluation may address:
- Dysphagia (swallowing)
- Dysarthria (slurred speech)
- Vocal quality concerns
SLP therapy may include:
- Education on vocal hygiene
- Use of Visi-Pitch equipment for voice
- Breathing exercises
- Oral motor exercises
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulation for swallowing (i.e. Vital Stim, if warranted)
- Recommendations of the safest, least restrictive food/liquid consistencies
- Safe swallow techniques
Speech-language pathologists also have a direct role in the delivery and management of services with Laryngectomy
patients (pre and post-surgery). We can provide education on equipment needed post-surgery as well as assist with choosing best communication option.
